Lunch to Inner City Residents
In late September, our congregation prepares and serves lunch to approximately 300 homeless and working poor individuals and families at the Bissell Centre in downtown Edmonton. Sign-up sheets are available on the tables in the Narthex in early September for volunteers as follows:
- Bakers prepare chocolate squares, cookies and rice krispie treats. Loaves are avoided as they are awkward to serve. We request that each volunteer baker makes only one recipe of their chosen dessert. Chocolate squares and cookies are the clear favourite of the inner city folk.
- Food Preparation volunteers are needed to prepare the food the day prior to the ICPM lunch. The volunteer team and the Community Outreach Committee meet at the church on Saturday morning to wash, cut and package vegetables, make 90 loaves of ham & cheese, egg salad, and tuna sandwiches and assemble trays of desserts. The team usually works from 9:30 a.m. till noon. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other while accomplishing a great deal of work for this outreach project.
- Lunch Serving Volunteers form a team of about 20 people to serve the lunch on Sunday morning. The team, which includes many of our Community Outreach Committee, meets with the IPCM staff at 9:30 AM to receive instructions, and to set out the lunch. After joining the local congregation for worship service, lunch is served. As a result of renovations at the Bissell Centre in 2019, seating space for serving lunch is now limited to 100 people. The remaining 150-200 lunches are assembled into lunch bags at our church the previous day, in readiness to hand out at the door on Sunday. The team assists with clean up, completing the project by 1:00 p.m.
